The Miramar Cultural Center is celebrating their Broadway Festival 2017. Their featured production during this time will be Dream Girls staring American Idol’s LaKisha Jones.

“I am super excited and super honored,” said Jones about playing the part of Effie White in the musical. “I have sung ‘And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going’ a million times, which was also my performance on American Idol. So it is really kind of good to kind of connect the two and I think it will be great. I am excited and I am just so thankful that they brought me down.”

The show is set to run for two days, Saturday July 22nd and Sunday July 23rd at the center located at 2400 Civic Center Place Miramar FL 33025. Regular seats are selling for $35 – $45 and VIP seats are $65 which also includes a post-show reception and preferred seating. As far as preparation goes, Jones said that she follows a strict regimen to insure that she stays healthy while she travels throughout the country.

“The preparation for me, this time, is a little different because I am already on the road so it is a battle of doing other shows and preparing to do ‘Dream Girls’ as well,” said Jones. “My preparation right now is really kind of crazy because I am taking a lot of vitamins, a lot of tea and making sure that I am able to perform the same while I am out on the road.”

While many have taken on the role of playing White in the musical, including Jenifer Hudson in the feature film version of the production, Jones believes that she will bring her unique style and make the performance her own.

“I’m just going on what I know and what I have to bring to the character,” said Jones. “I am not really focusing on other performances. If anything I do take [tips] from the original, which is with Jennifer Holiday. I am just going to do the best Effie that I can do, bring it and put LaKisha’s spin on it.

The cast also includes Khalifa White as Deena, David LaMarr as James “Thunder” Early and Richard E. Waits as Curtis.
