It’s rare for some people to beat the odds, follow their dreams and make a living at it. One South Florida photographer is traveling the world while capturing it through his eyes one snap at a time.
“My older cousin, he always had a camera around when I was growing up,” said Holiday Vargas of what jump-started his love for photography. “His mom and his brother painted, he was the only one with a camera. So I thought it was really cool. I just saw him with a camera and taking photos at my parties, my sisters’ parties … it was just a magnet. Like, ‘wow, what is this?!’ ”
Vargas has been shooting professionally since 2012 and is showing no signs of slowing down. He even recalls the first gig he landed that he shot for $100 an hour.
“My dad taught me to use the tools that I have to make things even better,” he said. “Someone reached out to me and said ‘hey, my friend has this night club business and he is looking for a photographer,’ I had no camera, no cash, no gear, nothing. And I was like, ‘Oh, I can do this, no problem’. So I did like anyone else, I went on YouTube. I went to Best Buy, I got a bundle kit, a Cannon T3i.”
The list of people and companies that Vargas has worked with seems almost endless. Some of his clients have included Hip Hop Magazine, The Source Magazine and Vice. While he has shot a lot of local venues and events in South Florida, traveling on the road almost seems like Vargas’ bread and butter. As for the future, he has his eyes set on helping others to reach their goals.
“I would say grinding with my craft, I’m not a greedy person,” he said. “Either I am part of a creative team helping brands and businesses to grow to what they could blossom into, or B, having my own agency where I am growing other brands and businesses.”
